If you look to the right of the UPC bar code, you probably noticed another bar code.  This one is called a Databar and was made by GS1 to both combat coupon hackers and to add more functionality and control of the coupon. The Databar added the ability to control the expiration date, set specific conditions of buying certain products to receive a discount, and to identify both where the coupon came from and who it is for.  Not all parts of the databar are necessary, but certain ones will be expected and may set off red flags without their inclusion.

There is another type of format called GS1/UCC-128 but it does not offer nearly as many options and information capabilities as Databar.
