Wilson Smooth Driver Review

It s a busy time of the year for new equipment releases. Feast your eyes on our picture gallery of some of the new gear that you ll be wanting to get your hands on in.

From Golf Magazine ClubTest, February 2010

Category: Max Game-Improvement Drivers

We tested: 9, 10.5, 12 with Fujikura E-Fit graphite shaft

Company line: The weight is farther back in the head as loft increases to maximize stability and improve launch conditions. The 9 produces a lower, more penetrating ball flight; the 10.5 and 12 have mass low and more rearward for a higher flight.

OUR TESTERS SAY:

PROS: Solid, dependable option if you re looking to hit more fairways; drives fly higher than loft would suggest; fairly useful with off-center hits; lightweight-head feel has its fans; testers suggest that it would be serviceable even for intermediate to better players; smooth, sleek shape is inoffensive.

CONS: Nothing spectacular in terms of power, feel or look; several panelists tend to lose shots to the right; some guys find that the light head lacks heft during the swing; average appearance is a precursor to overall performance.

From Golf Magazine Buyer s Guide, May 2009

Bob Thurman, Director of R D/Global Golf:

We initiated Project River Stone to explore an organic driver shape the opposite of the current trend of radical geometry, high-MOI driver designs. We want it to appeal to a traditional player while concealing the engine that drives low center of gravity CG and high MOI.

How it works: The 8 and 9 are crafted for better players they re more workable while the 10.5 and 12 are for less-skilled types they re more forgiving. Added mass low and farther rearward in the higher lofts means increased MOI and more built-in forgiveness. Shifting a club s CG back also increases dynamic loft as you swing. The face has varying thicknesses to pump up ball speed on off-center hits. The Fujikura Fit-On E100 shaft for slower swingers has a flexible tip to increase launch and add spin. The Fit-On E300 is for stronger, faster swingers who benefit from less spin and mid launch conditions.

Technology Overview-

Wilson may not be one of the big players on the block but they produce some great, relatively inexpensive golf equipment, the Wilson Smooth will fall into this category. This driver incorporates a changing weight pad in the sole of the club to optimize the CG within each loft from middle-low starting in the low lofts, to low and deep in the high lofts.

This 460cc driver is one of a smooth shape outside matched by the powerful, efficient performance on the inside. The Smooth is quite beautiful to look with great performance to match.

Actual Player Feedback-

That club s on steroids

A terrific performer

Wow, that s a good club, I missed two or three, and all would have been in the fairway

Pros/Positives-

The CG based on loft seems to be a good concept. This driver does not lack distance, Wilson even points to research that shows R Regular and S Stiff flex players picking up extra clubhead speed with the driver.

Cons/Negatives-

The Launch angle and Spin rate does not seem to favor the recreational player, low and high respectively.

Overall Rating-

The CG and face design do seem to favor added distance by way of increased clubhead speed. There isn t a lot of information available at the time of this writing however Wilson does seem to be onto something here with the Wilson Smooth.
